Chicks

I did two chickens. The first one was started after watching project runway with Connie this weekend. I did it without photo reference and found it kinda lacking, so I did another using photo reference. The first one's outline is done with a micron ink pen, the second in graphite. Both are colored with guache in my moleskin. I gave the second chicken a little photoshop darkening around the edges of the image, but other than that they're all hand done. :)

  1. I like both of them and I like the very traditional 'golden age of illustration' style. Well done!

However, I think that the one not from photo reference is a stronger silhouette and idea. The second one - to me - just looks good. I think the second one is lacking in personality when next to the first one that is boiling over with story and humor.

Way to go Baker! I really love these!

I'm drawing a spinosaurus out for a walk for a benefit, then I'm moving on to it's the more evolved cousin: the rooster. I'll post it later this week.

  2. Agreed, love the personality of the one you drew first. The second one is gorgeous, but I find the first one more memorable.
Glad I got to see the making of these guys. Hope to see more of you soon!

  3. Absolutely stunning, Celia! I see them both living in the very same world, the same coop; one is alive, and the other is Living It Up! I am inspired, thank you!
