Starbuck the Thoroughbred

Starbuck

I started this illustration for Illustrationology over a month ago, but for some weird reason I never felt like it was any good or even worth finishing. I sketched it out a dozen or so times, and tried painting it three times (second attempt below). Above is the final result – which I'm content with but I'll probably revisit this in the future.

2nd attempt

  1. I love it tim, the second piece speaks alot more to the situation and the setting.. the first seems a little static and could be anywhere....

    bravo sir! - what medium?

  3. Wonderful, Tim! I love the story potential of the first one, playing with the contrasts of Jockey and Horse. The Horse is huge, powerful, focused on the race and full speed ahead. The jockey is small, just along for the ride. I'd make the jockey smaller and on a cell phone and you've got yourself a great one! The text doesn't say anything the illustration doesn't already; lots of room for the text to add to the story. Keep it up!

  4. I was trying to make the text tell the view that the horse is Starbuck and not the jockey. I was also trying to teat this as a faux book-spread so I wanted to have some text to see how it would look compared to my style. What would be better text? Perhaps something like: "With each gallop Starbuck went faster and faster down the track!"?

  5. Hmmm, Starbuck is going the wrong way on the track - which is why the cell phone could be hilarious. Maybe some hoofs running off the page to the right. The text could add sounds, the horses thoughts, the jockey's conversation, the grandstand announcer, etc...
